Earlier in the autumn term, Year 6 planted garlic in our Secret Garden. This week, after patiently waiting and caring for their crop, they were finally able to harvest it.
It took a fair bit of digging to uncover the bulbs, but the children were rewarded with impressively large garlic heads, each carrying a very strong and unmistakable smell! The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were delighted to take their harvest home, with the hope that families may have since been able to use it in their meals.
The excitement and sense of achievement among the children was clear to see throughout the session. Experiences like this are a wonderful reminder of the value of hands-on, outdoor learning.
The Secret Garden itself is a truly special space within the school. With thanks to the Parents’ Association for their support in creating it, it provides a peaceful sanctuary where children can immerse themselves in nature, learn about sustainability, and experience the full journey of growing food from planting to harvest.
We are now looking ahead to further produce in the garden, with strawberries, raspberries, and apples all on their way in the coming weeks.
