Our School Council gives pupils a voice in school life, providing an opportunity for children to share ideas, suggest changes and play an active role in making Richmond House an even better place.
Led this term by our two Year 6 representatives, the School Council includes two pupils from each year group from Year 3 to Year 6. Children are encouraged to approach their representatives with suggestions, whether there is something they would like to change, introduce or improve. These ideas are then discussed with Mrs Hogg and can be taken forward to Mrs Young.
Our Year 6 representatives explained how important it is for everyone to feel comfortable sharing their thoughts. “Sometimes it’s nice to tell another child,” explained one representative, while the other encouraged pupils to “come to us on the playground” with their ideas. By being approachable and listening to their peers, the Council helps ensure that every pupil has an opportunity to be heard.
The Council also plays an important role in organising activities and supporting charities. This year, representatives are particularly looking forward to doing more charity work in support of Martin House, alongside exploring ideas such as bringing back the school’s popular food days.
For one of our Year 6 leads, the role is all about making a positive difference: “I like helping the school. It feels good to make a positive change and to think we helped with that. I feel proud.” Their fellow representative is equally excited about the opportunity to “make our mark” and represent pupils across the school.
It’s a responsibility that reflects the welcoming and supportive community we are so proud of at Richmond House. As one representative beautifully put it: “The teachers are caring and you can easily make friends. It’s a friendly place.”
