Our Headteacher, Mrs Young, reflects on the joy and value of mathematics for pupils at Richmond House.
“Mathematics sits at the very heart of our curriculum, and it is a genuine pleasure to see just how much our pupils enjoy it. Leeds is officially the UK’s first City of Maths, with a strong tradition of mathematical thinking, innovation and excellence, and we are proud to play our part in nurturing that spirit within our school.
One of the great joys of my role is hearing so many children tell me how much they love maths. Whether they are excitedly explaining a new method they have mastered or confidently tackling a tricky problem, their enthusiasm is a wonderful reflection of the culture we have created. We believe that mathematics is about far more than numbers – it develops logical thinking, creativity, perseverance and the ability to approach challenges with confidence.
We place particular importance on stretching and challenging our more able learners, ensuring that every child is encouraged to think deeply, reason clearly and push beyond what they already know. Through carefully planned lessons, rich problem-solving opportunities and thoughtful questioning, our teachers work hard to give pupils the chance to explore maths at a greater depth.
Above all, our staff do a fantastic job of making mathematics engaging, accessible and enjoyable for all. By combining high expectations with a positive, supportive approach, we aim to give every child the skills and confidence they need – not only to succeed in maths at school, but to carry those skills forward into whatever paths they choose in the future.”
