Year 2 have been fully immersed in the class book The Barnabus Project by the Fan Brothers. They began by exploring the “Perfect Pets” shop, where all the pets looked flawless, adorable, and ready for new homes. The children wrote descriptive pieces about these perfect animals.

However, the story soon introduced a hidden laboratory beneath the shop, home to the “Failed Projects” – pets who didn’t make it to the shop because they were considered a little different. Year 2 embraced the challenge of seeing the value in these unique pets, discovering that while they might not be perfect in appearance, they were full of love, loyalty, and other wonderful qualities.

As part of a cross-curricular project, the children created their own Failed Projects, wrote persuasive advertisements to find them new owners, and then developed sales pitches in small groups. Through this work, the class explored important PSHE themes, celebrating differences, recognising the value of individuality, and understanding that perfection isn’t always best.
