Headteacher Mrs Sharon Young shares her reflections on why outdoor experiences matter so deeply for our pupils:
“We have enjoyed some glorious cold, crisp, sunny mornings in recent weeks – the perfect reminder of just how uplifting and invigorating time outside can be. These moments highlight the value of stepping outdoors, embracing nature, and making the most of the beautiful environment around us.
At Richmond House, we believe that a child’s education extends far beyond the classroom walls. Time spent outdoors is not only essential for physical wellbeing but also for nurturing creativity, curiosity, and a deep connection with the natural world.
We are incredibly fortunate to have extensive outdoor space on our campus, providing a safe and inspiring environment for children to learn, play, and explore. Our outdoor learning provision is a key part of school life, offering opportunities for hands-on discovery, problem-solving, and imaginative play. Whether it’s harvesting fruit and vegetables in the Secret Garden, climbing and balancing in our adventure playground, or engaging in outdoor science and literacy activities, our pupils thrive when given the freedom to connect with nature.
Physical activity is also central to our school’s values. Our PE lessons and sports provision ensure that children enjoy the benefits of movement, teamwork, and resilience, whether on the playing fields, the netball and tennis courts, or during cross-country runs through our beautiful grounds. These experiences not only support their physical development but also encourage perseverance, confidence, and a lifelong love of staying active.
Our commitment to outdoor learning and play is at the heart of our school’s ethos. In a world where children are increasingly drawn to screens, we strive to ensure that they have the time, space, and encouragement to step outside, breathe in fresh air, and engage with the natural world. Whether through reading, exploring, playing, or learning new skills, we want every child at Richmond House to experience the joy and wonder that only the outdoors can provide.”
