We were delighted to welcome a visitor from the British Library to Richmond House, who led an engaging poetry workshop for our Year 5 pupils. The session began with an introduction to the British Library, where the children learned about its role, the incredible collections it holds, and the work that goes on behind the scenes to preserve and celebrate literature.

The workshop then focused on the poetry toolkit MORERAPS, helping pupils explore key poetic techniques:

M – Metaphor: describing one thing as something else

O – Onomatopoeia: using words that imitate sounds

R – Rhyme: creating rhythm and flow

E – Emotion: expressing feelings through words

R – Repetition: repeating words or phrases for effect

A – Alliteration: using the same starting letter in words

P – Personification: giving human qualities to objects or ideas

S – Simile: comparing things using “like” or “as”

After exploring these techniques, our pupils had the opportunity to write their own poems, experimenting with MORERAPS to bring their ideas to life. The session was full of creativity, energy, and imagination, leaving the children inspired and proud of their poetic creations.
