A Year 5 pupil returned to Richmond House after the half term to find a very special surprise waiting for him – a personal letter from Sir David Attenborough!

Before the holidays, he wrote a creative poem all about penguins, exploring not only what they do and are known for, but also imagining some funny and unexpected things they don’t do – such as skydiving, practising kung fu, or ruling over the Roman Empire! Delighted with his poem, he decided to send it to one of his heroes, Sir David Attenborough.

To his amazement, Sir David not only read his poem but also took the time to reply personally, writing:

“Thank you for your letter and for sending me your poem. I think it is very good.
Best wishes, David Attenborough.”

Reflecting on the experience, the pupil said:

“I was going to write about pancakes at first, but then I thought penguins would be better! My friend said, ‘First pancakes, then penguins – what next, pies?’ I like writing about nature, and I thought David Attenborough might like my poem. When I found out he had written back, I was so excited, I was jumping up and down! I think David Attenborough is really inspiring with all his documentaries about animals and nature. This has made me want to do even more writing.”

Headteacher Mrs Young added, “We’re all so proud of him. What a wonderful recognition of his creativity and initiative!”
