Our Year 3 pupils had an incredible two-night residential trip to the Cranedale Centre in Malton, packed with adventure, learning, and fun!

On the first day, the children embarked on a scenic walk along the cliffs at Bempton, binoculars in hand, to spot a variety of seabirds. They were thrilled to see gannets, kittiwakes, guillemots, razorbills, and fulmars, with an extra special treat of spotting a tiny puffin! That evening, the children threw themselves into the excitement of setting up humane mammal traps in the Cranedale woods. These carefully prepared traps, filled with food and insulated to keep any creatures cosy, were left overnight, and the children eagerly awaited the chance to check them the next day.

The second day was filled with even more adventure. After checking the traps and discovering who had visited, the pupils headed down to the river for some hands-on river dipping. They uncovered a fascinating array of tiny invertebrates, and using a tree diagram, they identified the species they found. Back at the centre, the children took a closer look at their discoveries through microscopes, creating detailed scientific diagrams as they went.

On the final day, the group visited Flamborough Head, where they explored the rock pools and searched for fish, crabs, and other coastal creatures.

It was a brilliant mix of nature exploration, scientific learning, and team activities, and the pupils returned full of stories and new knowledge after a memorable experience.
