What a marvellous time we have had celebrating World Book Day! This year, our theme was ‘Read Your Way’ and throughout the day, our pupils participated in a range of exciting activities and events, all centred around the theme of reading for pleasure. Highlights from an action-packed day included:

The launch of the Richmond House Reading Challenge. Each phase of the school has received a sheet with a series of exciting challenges. Nursery, Pre-school, and Reception pupils have 25 challenges to complete, while Year 1 to 6 pupils have 50 challenges. Challenges vary from “build a den and read a book inside” to “write a book review to share with your classmates” to “read a book borrowed from the school library.”

All pupils read Oliver Jeffers book ‘Here We Are’ and enjoyed activities inspired by the book. The simple, life-affirming picture book is both an overview of Earth and a guide to living well: concepts of kindness, tolerance, and environmental responsibility flow seamlessly into the sparse but perfectly judged text.

Children in Reception had a delightful excursion to Temple Newsam, where they were enthralled to witness the traditional tale of ‘The Princess and the Pea’ brought to life amidst the historic period rooms of the House.

Our Year 5 pupils shared their love of reading by spending quality time with our Year 1 children. During this heart-warming session, the Year 5 pupils took on the role of storytellers, captivating their younger peers with a selection of engaging stories.

We held a book drive in support of the Children’s Book Project, collecting good quality books that our pupils have outgrown. These books will be donated to children and families throughout the city, providing them with the chance to experience the joy of owning their own books. A heartfelt thank you to the Richmond House community for your generous donations—we received an abundance of books!

We extend a big thank you to our English and Humanities Lead, Mrs Angela Young, for coordinating such a brilliant day.

As we reflect on the success of World Book Day, let us continue to encourage our children to read for pleasure every day. Whether it’s curling up with a favourite story before bedtime or exploring new worlds in the pages of a book, let’s nurture a lifelong love of reading in our children.
