English

The children are introduced to using the ‘Look, Say, Trace, Cover, Write, Check’ method to learn weekly spellings. They learn to blend sounds, to help both reading and spelling. Children learn to write simple sentences and to develop the confidence to write independently. A wide variety of reading schemes are used and children visit the library regularly. Letter formation is practised on a weekly basis using the cursive script.

Mathematics

Children learn to use mathematical vocabulary. They look at place value.
Data handling and simple problem solving is introduced. Coin recognition is extended and the properties of 2D shapes are explored.
Strategies will be developed to support mental calculation.
Telling the time and measuring are included. Simple fractions are introduced.

Science

The children investigate the topics of materials, light and sound. They explore forces and find out what animals and plants need in order to survive.

ICT

The children will continue to use the ICT suites, using the computers to support different aspects of the curriculum. They will further develop mouse control and the use of the keyboard through various programmes. Programmable robots are a fun way of learning about giving instructions accurately!

The Humanities

The children learn about life in the past and some of the history of our school and local area. In Geography, the children learn about different places and types of weather. The children concentrate on stories from the Old Testament. They learn about the baptism of Jesus and find out about Jewish and Christian beliefs. As a school we visit St Chad’s Church for the celebration of Harvest. The Humanities curriculum is enhanced by trips out of school.

Modern Foreign Languages

In Year 1 children build upon the foundations laid in Nursery and Reception and practise greetings, and simple conversations. They learn colours, numbers, how to talk about their age and birthdays. They also spend some time looking at French stories. The focus is very much on speaking and listening but they begin to read some simple words and phrases at the end of the year.

Art and Design Technology

Children develop their skills in such areas as cutting and mixing paint. The children use a variety of materials. In Design and Technology lessons the children experiment with using moving parts and develop their fine motor skills through cutting, folding, assembling and sewing.

Music

The children explore sounds and develop listening skills. They will learn to play the scale of D-major on a 4-hole ocarina. They read a form of graphic scoring and create a simple graphic score. They will explore beat, rhythm skills and learn to identify different pitches. They learn a variety of songs for their enjoyment and to perform.

Physical Education

Pupils explore and develop basic gymnastic actions using the floor and apparatus. They improve their game skills and spacial awareness and use a wide range of equipment.

PSHE

PSHE is concerned with getting along together well and being safe.
