Foundation Stage

We understand that starting school is a big step. That is why we provide a happy and welcoming environment for your child’s journey to begin. The early years are some of the most important and formative for our children. They begin to interact with others and they are curious to explore the exciting world around them.

At Richmond House we provide a safe and secure setting that encourages our children to learn in stimulating and structured surroundings. We want our children to be confident and happy to learn. Children are taught and expected to have good manners and high standards of behaviour.

Our well-equipped Foundation Stage is made up of a Nursery and 2 Reception classes. Each Reception class consists of around 18 children and is taught by a fully qualified Early Years teacher and supported by an experienced teaching assistant.

Our Nursery is taught by Mrs Campbell who is a fully qualified teacher, and a team of highly experienced and well qualified teaching assistants, to enable us to maintain a staff-pupil ratio of 1:7. It provides an excellent introduction to school life and is an integral part of the main school. Children benefit from the wide range of facilities and specialisms the School has to offer including PE, French, Music, Design Technology, ICT and Outdoor Learning.

The Foundation Stage building is adjacent to the main school. The classrooms were rebuilt in the Summer of 2019 and offer spacious and cheerful open classrooms giving young children plenty of space to explore, learn and play. The Early Years children also have use of their own library and quiet room to facilitate and encourage a love of reading and books. The building directly opens onto a safe and secure outdoor play area with a wide range of age appropriate toys and equipment. The facility is designed to give our younger children the freedom to move between rooms and activities, inside and out, and learn in a manner conducive to their age group.

Children attending Nursery and Reception are very much part of the main school. They wear the same uniform, come to school assemblies, eat their lunch in the main dining room, use the school Library and specialist rooms and participate in whole School events. We believe this integration makes for a smooth, natural transition into the Main School when your child moves into Year 1. They also have many opportunities to interact with the older children, through lunchtime monitoring, playtimes and also when the older children come to play and read to them.

With the Early Years Foundation Stage being curricular based, our vision is to provide a secure and fun learning environment where children can develop into a happy, caring, questioning and confident individuals ready for the years ahead.

We accept children into Nursery in the term in which they turn 3. Our Nursery offers flexible sessions, with a minimum number of 5 sessions per week. You can choose between full day sessions, morning sessions, afternoon sessions or a combination of these depending on individual requirements and availability.

We know that choosing the right nursery and school for your child is such an important decision, so please do come and visit us, we would be delighted to show you around and answer any questions you may have.

Reception is a fun and exciting time for your child. It is the time where children are equipped with the academic and social skills needed to successfully continue on their personal learning journeys.  At Richmond House we aim to make this a time full of inspiration and discovery, so that your child enjoys coming to school and learning, and becomes a confident and independent individual.

Children who are 4 on 1st September can join Reception. Priority is given to those in our Nursery, but there can be availability to move to Richmond House School in Reception. It is important to enrol your child as soon as possible before their school start date to ensure a smooth transition from their current setting.
