Dear Parents

We have always requested that you let us know if your child is going to be absent from school, or late arriving. In the case of unexpected events, such as illness, a call or email to the office in the morning is sufficient. From next week (25 February), if there is no prior notification and we do not hear from you by 8.45am, we will telephone you. This is only to ensure that your child is safe.

Parent Consultations

Year 3 consultations will be held this Tuesday 26 February. If you have not yet made an appointment, please contact the Office on Monday. Mrs Matthews and Mrs Yates will be in their own classrooms.

Our specialist teacher evening takes place this Thursday 28 February. Parents of children further up the school wishing to see a specialist teacher regarding a specific issue or concern, should inform the Office by Tuesday at the very latest please. Mrs Phillips, our French teacher, is not able to be present on this occasion, but please feel free to contact her via the office if you have a specific query.

CAR PARKING

Leeds City Council has an ‘experimental order’ in place from next Monday 25 February which will restrict parking in some of the roads around school. The date of the actual works is unknown but could be any time from Monday 25 February.

This is in response to the increased parking by Leeds Met students which has caused uncontrolled, inconsiderate parking, obstructing driveways and prevention of access for refuse collection and, more seriously, potentially for emergency vehicles.

The school received a notice detailing the proposed parking restrictions in December and immediately entered into lengthy correspondence with the Highways Department, Council and local councillors. Specific actions taken by the school:

  • A series of objections have been made to the Highways Department, highlighting the potential impact.
  • The school has suggested a more effective short term solution for residents and the school, eg time restricted parking, but this currently has not been taken on board.
  • The school has offered to pay for any signs or work associated with a better temporary solution.
  • The school has employed a traffic consultant to assist in the formal process

A copy of the notice plus details of the temporary parking restrictions are displayed on the parents’ notice board on the top playground. A full copy is displayed in the Nursery window by the rear gate and also available to view in the school office.

The key areas with temporary double yellow lines will be:

  • The “residents’ side” of Glen Road;
  • Within 15 metres of junction of Glen Road and Weetwood Lane;
  • Ancaster Road will remain unlimited parking except within 15m of junctions.

The school has been working for many months and will continue to work and consult with the Council traffic management team, local councillors, residents and other experts in the processes of highways development (!) who can effect the best solution for the school.

INDIA DAY – YEAR 4

Next Thursday, 28 February, Year 4 will be having an ‘India Day’ in school as part of their geography topic. For this to be a success as it has been in previous years, we would like to invite any parents or friends to come along to help us. If you have a skill or talent that you think may contribute to the range of activities we can offer next Thursday, please contact Mrs Phair or Mr Oldham. In the past, these have included cookery demonstrations, Mendhi pattern drawing, demonstrations of Indian musical instruments and sari demonstrations. If you are able to offer any of the above, or similar, we are very keen to hear from you. We are aware that this is short notice, but we would like to thank you in advance for any contributions you might be able to make.

PERIPATETIC MUSIC LESSONS

Any child who wishes to stop lessons must give half a term’s notice by Friday 14 March – lessons will continue during the notice period until Summer Half Term. New forms can be collected from the office for any child wishing to start instrument lessons which will be £16.00 per half hour.

Parents of children who take peri lessons are invited to attend their final lesson of the term during the week before we break up for Easter. As we break up on Thursday 20 March, for children who have a lesson on Friday, their parents are invited to attend the Friday before. Please let the Office know if you are able to attend.

TRIPS

Our Year 4 children enjoyed a fun and informative day at Danelaw yesterday as part of their topic on the Anglo Saxons. We gather that the teachers had to be the children’s slaves! Here are some of their thoughts about the day:

“We learned about being an Anglo Saxon. We did different activities. My favourite was grinding the wheat to make flour for bread” – Adare Robins.
“When we went to Dane Law, we learnt how Sarsons lived. When my group was on guard duty, we got attacked by a Roman Spy! It was amazing” – Rachel Kempner

“When I went to Danelaw, it was really good. When it was my turn to be the guards, me, Cameron and David were guarding the front gate and we saw an enemy but the enemy was actually the lady. The lady invited us to her banquet and the teachers were the slaves and they danced and Mr Oldham got put in the stocks. I thought it was the best trip I’ve ever been on!” – James Farenden.

Year 4 are going to Cadbury World on Monday 25 February leaving at 08.30 and returning for 17.00. Please send your child with a “sensible” amount of pocket money in a named purse or envelope.

As part of their topic on Famous People in History, Year 2 will be watching a performance about Florence Nightingale and the Crimean War presented by Tempus Fugit Education on Thursday 28 February. The children will have an opportunity to dress up in period costume, which will be provided, during this event.

Photographs

Orders for the Individual and Family photographs have now been sent to Tempest. If you still have your order, please send it directly to Tempest – instructions are on the envelope.

Absences

It is a legal requirement that parents must inform the school of reasons for all absences. If your child has been off school for any reason this week, please inform the office. Children who have written for permission to be absent do not need to write again.

SPORT

Badminton Result

Our badminton team produced an excellent 23-7 win over Leeds Grammar’s U11 team on Monday. Well done – all the players should be commended for their very good play and sporting attitude.

Next Week’s Fixtures

On Tuesday, our U10 and U11 netball teams are playing Highfield away. They will travel by minibus and will return to Richmond House School at about 5.40pm. On the same day, our U11 rugby team are playing Highfield at home, starting at 3.40pm. These players may be collected from the pavilion at 4.30pm.

The last cross country league race of the season is on Saturday 1 March at Boston Spa. The runners have been given full details. Good luck to all these teams.

After School Netball – Tuesday 26 February
