Year 3 Curriculum
Mathematics
We revise and reinforce work from Year 2, and will study time, 2D and 3D, right angles and symmetry in more depth.
We will also investigate fractions and money, work on metric units and reading scales.
We look at perimeter and area and data handling.
English
We will be looking at stories with familiar settings, using and writing instructions, information texts and poems.
We will look at traditional tales, myths and legends. We will continue to develop our dictionary skills, spelling patterns and rules.
Science
Topics covered include Teeth and Eating, Characteristics of Materials, Colour and Light and Magnets and Springs.
We also find out about rocks and soils and discover how to help plants grow.
History
We begin with Ancient Egypt. Romans and Celts complete the year.
Geography
The World, Europe and the British Isles are the main focus. Pupils look at the local area too. Plans, maps, compass directions and grid references are introduced.
Religious Education
We look at the significance of religious signs and symbols and aspects of festivals of light, in particular the festival of Divali. Later in the year we look at the life of Jesus and learn about why Easter is celebrated. The structure of the Bible is explored and the nature of faith.
ICT
Pupils will use our two ICT suites and learn how to use the Internet and use Microsoft Word for formatting text, inserting Clip Art and WordArt. They will use sound on the computer too. They will also begin to learn touch typing.
French
Pupils will build their knowledge and confidence with speaking and listening to the language. There is a strong focus on enjoyment through using a variety of songs, games, rhymes and stories.
Art and Design Technology
Looking at patterns and using the Batik process. Children learn basic pottery skills. Portrait drawing skills and creative portraits are explored.
Each child will learn how to use tools with care. Wheels and axles are introduced.
Physical Education
PE - To develop positive attitudes to a healthy lifestyle through the teaching of Gymnastics, Athletics and Health Related Fitness.
Games - Focus on Hockey, Hi-5 Netball and Rounders for the girls and Tag Rugby, Football and Kwick Cricket for the boys. In addition pupils have the opportunity to participate in other Games related activities.
Swimming - In addition to the PE and Games curriculum Year 3 and 4 pupils have swimming lessons on a weekly basis.
Music
Children will perform and analyse short descriptive compositions that combine sounds, movement and words. They will also learn to play the ukulele and explore pentatonic scales and create short melodies.
PSHE
We will be looking at rules and laws – class rules, dining hall rules, circle time rules and also personal rules and beliefs. We will also think about keeping safe – indoors and outside and look at the importance of being organised.
