SUMMER TERM 2009 - YEAR 5

Mathematics
Pupils will revise multiplication and division with emphasis being placed on showing working out for complex calculations. Time, timetables and probability will be studied. Word problems and investigations will be covered.

English
Persuasive English will include advertisements, letters, discussions, role play, leaflet writing, newspaper reports and essays. Writing for different audiences and an oral presentation to a large group will be undertaken.

Science
The two topics studied this term are sound and keeping healthy. Pupils will learn about how sounds are made and how they travel. In the second half term, the focus is on keeping the body healthy through a sensible diet and exercise.

History
We will continue with our Tudor topic, looking at the threats from Mary, Queen of Scots, and the Spanish Armada. We will investigate exploration during the Tudor period and topics such as food and entertainment.

Geography
The children will be looking at the environment, addressing issues relating to water, biodiversity, energy pollution and the unequal distribution of the world’s wealth.

French

Religious Education
Christian beliefs and actions.

ICT
The children will learn about spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel. They will also use an adventure programme and models to begin to explore controlling devices and monitoring equipment.

Art
Pupils will glaze their ceramic mugs and tiles and will then continue to study formal drawing and still life. They will investigate and respond to the options for creating Art with found objects.

Physical Education
In games pupils will practise throwing, catching and batting skills and the boys will use these skills in games of cricket and softball. The girls will play rounders and tennis.
In PE all pupils will do athletics until half term and tennis after half term.

Design Technology
The children will continue working on their electric door buzzers. They will produce a parallel electric circuit that incorporates a buzzer and an LED. Soldering skills will be developed to secure the components in place.

Music

PSHE
We will be looking at the following areas during the year: Rules and Laws, My Body, Keeping Healthy, Me and My Relationships, Keeping Safe and Making the Most of my Abilities.

Drama
Pupils will work on improvisation and role-play.
