SUMMER TERM 2009 - YEAR 4

Mathematics
The number operations of multiplication, division, addition and subtraction will be reinforced and extended as the children learn and evaluate further strategies. Decimals will be introduced and the equivalence between fraction and decimal forms. Topic work will focus on using increasingly complex timetables in everyday contexts and shape work will develop a further understanding of perimeter and angle.

English
The range of texts for this term concentrates on stories and short novels which raise issues. A selection of different types of poetry is studied. In non-fiction writing we will be examining the content, structure and language features of discursive and persuasive texts.

Science
The pupils study friction and habitats. During the first half term, they will be learning about the different forces and how they act on each other. The second half term will involve finding out about different habitats and how animals are adapted to living in these environments.

History
This term the children will continue learning about the Anglo-Saxons. They will study Saxon homes, farming methods, the conversion to Christianity and Alfred the Great. They will also learn about Viking warriors, longships and gods.

Geography
The children will study India and Kenya, looking at daily life. They will look at Chembakoli (a village in India) and compare this with city life in Mumbai.

French

Religious Education
Religions in our neighbourhood.

ICT
The children will complete their unit of work about data collection and the use of pie charts and questionnaires. They will then explore the use of modelling effects on screen, giving instructions and using packages such as 'Logo'. They will continue to access the internet and develop touch-typing skills.

Art
Pupils will look at aerial patterns in our landscape. They will create the story of a journey in symbols incorporating computer skills.

Physical Education
Athletics (1st Half Term), tennis (2nd Half Term)
Girls: Rounders, tennis
Boys: Cricket, softball.
Personal survival skills.

Design Technology
The children will be looking at gears and what part they play in everyday life. They will use the construction games to demonstrate what gears can do and look at household gadgets that we use on a daily basis, eg can opener, drill, whisk. The children will design a model that uses gears to make it work and they will make their own 6 spoke gears to go into the model. They will design their model using a two way projection, showing the front and the side. Food Technology includes designing a wrapper and making a chocolate chewy bar.
