SUMMER TERM 2009 - YEAR 1

Mathematics
We shall be studying money, time measuring using non-standard units to estimate mass and capacity, solving simple problems and classifying data. We will work on fractions, solid shapes and reinforcing place value.

English
We shall continue to work on spellings, which will include word endings and reading skills. The children will receive guidance on sentence construction in order to develop confidence in independent writing.

Science
We shall study the topics of plants in different habitats and forces.

History/Geography
We shall study our local environment and compare it to Ilkley town and moor.

Religious Education
We shall cover the miracles of Jesus and St Francis and the biblical account of Creation.

ICT
In addition to extending the skills already in place the children will explore simple data collection and presenting information using software such as 2Simple. They will consolidate their word processing skills to support topic work and learn more about some of the tools available. They will also explore 'giving instructions' in a practical way, which will introduce them to the use of a programmable robot.

Art
The children will look at the work of van Gogh and his different paintings. They will create sunflowers using different media.

Physical Education
Athletic skills, short tennis, dance and ball skills will all be developed.

Design Technology
We will be designing a roundabout and looking at various ways of making it move. Also designing a Bird Scarer for the wild life garden.

Music
Music elements this term will be exploring pitch: high, medium, and low.

PSHE
The children will learn about keeping safe and recognising each other’s qualities.
