SPRING TERM 2009 - YEAR 6

Mathematics
We shall again be looking at fractions, area and volume and finishing off our preparation for the entrance examinations. We will investigate what happens to shapes when you reflect or rotate them or move them elsewhere, studying reflective and rotational symmetry. We will look at positive and negative correlation, shape construction and number problem solving.

English
We will study classic poetry and poetry since 1900. We will be looking at Chaucer’s ‘The Canterbury Tales’ to see how language has developed over time. The pupils will study the function of etymological dictionaries, develop persuasive and discursive writing, look at mystery writing and finish off our pre-examination preparation.

Science
Year 6 will be learning how to change electrical circuits, how light works and how we see things.

History
We will be continuing our topic on Victorian Britain and the British Empire until half-term. We will then by studying World War II looking at how the war affected children.

Geography
We will be studying settlements.

French
TBC

Religious Education
Sacred texts and the Qu’ran.

ICT
The children will continue to develop their skills on the spreadsheet programme, Microsoft Excel. They will continue to develop their skills with control technology through exploring scenarios on Junior Control Insight.

Art
The pupils will look at pattern which will be used as inspiration when exploring Batik as an art form.

Physical Education
This term pupils will practise their sports acrobatics pairs work and indoor athletics skills.
In games the girls will do hockey and netball while the boys do football and tag rugby.

Design Technology
We will be continuing the vehicle project and then designing and making a ball-bearing game incorporating a vacuum formed lid.

Music
In our instrumental work, the children will continue the song writing project. We will be looking in more detail at form and structure and lyric writing, with particular reference to the work of other composers.
We will rehearse and finalise a score.

PSHE
We will be looking at the following areas during the year: Rules and Laws, My Body, Keeping Healthy, Me and My Relationships, Keeping Safe and Making the Most of My Abilities.
