SPRING TERM 2009 - YEAR 5

Mathematics
Pupils will continue to work on decimals/place values and graphs, measurement, capacity, volume. Percentages, rounding and negative numbers will also be studied.

English
Pupils will study story writing skills, redrafting, descriptive writing and the use of annotated drawings. They will also source poetry work including rhymes, rhythms and alliteration. They will compare information sources and look at research skills.

Science
Topics this term are changing state, learning about the processes of evaporation and condensation. Then the Earth, Sun and Moon.

Geography
This term Year 5 will be studying maps and mapping. This will include atlas and mapwork skills, drawing plans using a key and scale, 4 & 6 figure grid reference skills and using O.S. Maps.

History
Continuing through logically. This will include the establishment of the Church of England.

French
TBC

Religious Education
The Christian Bible.

ICT
The children will learn how to keep themselves safe on the internet via the Cybercafe website. They will begin to learn how to use Microsoft Powerpoint to create a slide show. They will also continue to develop touch-typing skills.

Art
Hand built pottery. Examples by craftspeople will be seen during a visit to the Temple Newsam House and their work will be put into an historical perspective.

Physical Education
Pupils will continue to develop their gymnastics skills and will link symmetrical and asymmetrical balances and move to produce a sequence of at least eight elements. After half term they will practise their indoor athletics skills.
In games the girls will do hockey and netball while the boys do football and tag rugby.

Design Technology
Continuing with the eccentric wheel model. Designing and making a battery powered door buzzer incorporating a light emitting diode.

We will be looking at the following areas during the year: Rules and Laws, My Body, Keeping Healthy, Me and My Relationships, Keeping Safe and Making the Most of My Abilities.
