SPRING TERM 2009 - YEAR 4

Mathematics
We will be studying fractions and decimals, frequency tables, place value, revision of multiplication and division, capacity, area, symmetry, direction and bar graphs.

English
We will be learning to use speech marks and how to punctuate speech within a sentence. We will practise writing in paragraphs and we look at the function and use of verbs and adverbs. The children will learn how to scan and locate information in non-fiction texts and develop their research skills. In fiction we will be focusing on imaginary worlds, comparing and contrasting settings and using expressive and descriptive language to enhance stories.

Science
For the first part of term the topic is keeping warm, learning about different thermal conductors and insulators. During the second half of term, the pupils will be learning about solids, liquids and how they can be separated.

History
We will continue to study the Ancient Greeks. We will be looking in particular at daily life, war, home, food and pottery. We will begin to study the Anglo Saxons during the second half of the term including a visit to Danelaw.

Geography
We will be studying the lives and customs of people from India and comparing that country with our own.

French

Religious Education
The Easter Story.

ICT
The children will collect information, enter data and prepare appropriate graphs. They will use questionnaires and pie charts to compare the effectiveness of different charts. They will continue to develop touch-typing skills and access the internet.

Art
Pupils will look at the different types of marks to be made with different media. Experimentation with different materials will be carried out and they will interpret the style of an artist’s work through their own.

Physical Education
This term boys will continue to concentrate on football and tag rugby skills and girls will concentrate on netball and hockey skills.
In PE lessons all pupils will work with a partner to produce a short gymnastics sequence. In the second half of the term they will work on a range of indoor athletics skills.
In swimming pupils will continue to practise their basic strokes and will be introduced to basic diving skills.

Design Technology
Looking at structures and designing a land yacht.

Music
ICT and music will be explored using Dance ejay. A composition project is done involving composing and recording a song.
For Easter, the cantata, “The Burning Bush” is learnt.

PSHE
This term we will be looking at how to keep healthy by exercising our bodies and learning more about friendships and what makes them effective.
