SPRING TERM 2009 - YEAR 3

Mathematics
We will be investigating fractions and money, followed by work on metric units and reading scales. We will continue to work with mathematical calculations, both oral and written.

English
We will be looking at traditional tales, myths and legends followed by instruction writing and poetry. We will continue to develop our dictionary skills and focus on singular and plural nouns. Spelling patterns and rules will continue to be investigated.

Science
This term we will be finding out about (1) rocks and soils, followed by (2) Helping plants to grow.

History
We will be completing our Ancient Egyptian topic by finding out about mummification, papyrus and hieroglyphics with some work on Gods and Goddesses. After half term we will start our Roman topic by investigating the Celts, the invasions by Julius Caesar and Claudius and we will find out about life in the army.

Geography
We will be studying the school and the local area. The pupils will look at the school grounds and consider the use of the land and suggest improvements. They will study the land use on Otley Road, complete a traffic survey and look at employment within the area, They will also look at jobs within the school and interview non-teaching staff.

Religious Education
Jesus and the Bible.

ICT
(1) Manipulating sound, using sound recorder.
(2) Introducing databases

French

Art
We will be studying different clay techniques. Pupils will create animals and birds of different kinds.

Physical Education
We will be developing gymnastic skills and producing individual sequences. After half term we will be doing a range of indoor athletics skills.
In games, the girls will be playing hockey and netball and the boys will play football and tag rugby.
The children will continue to develop their swimming strokes and water skills.

Design Technology
The children will be looking at wheels and axles. They will be shown different ways of making wheels and the different ways to attach them.

Music
Compose a three-part animal sequence which will adhere strictly to given criteria. This will be rehearsed and performed. Revisit descant recorder and revise notes B, A and G.
“The Burning Bush”, which is an Easter cantata, is also learned.

PSHE
We will be finding out about “My Body” in connection with personal hygiene and keeping healthy.
