AUTUMN TERM 2008 - YEAR 1

Mathematics
Children will learn to use the vocabulary of addition and subtraction.
Data handling and simple problem solving will be introduced. Coin recognition will be extended and properties of 2D shapes will be explored.
Strategies will be developed to support mental calculation, and mathematical vocabulary will be increased.

English
The children will be introduced to using ‘Look, Say, Trace, Cover, Write, Check’ method, to learn their weekly spellings. This will be supported by a homework sheet. The children will learn to blend consonant, vowel, consonant and final consonant blends. The reading scheme and cursive style of handwriting will be developed. The children will be encouraged to develop confidence in independent writing. The children will visit the school library throughout the year.

Science
The topics of Holidays, Ourselves, Materials and Light are covered.

History
Our topic is based on Life in the Past and includes learning about the history of our school.

Geography
We look at the destinations and features of holiday places in geographical terms.

Religious Education
We concentrate on Old Testament stories from the Bible, especially those stories relating to children and festivals.

ICT
The children will be introduced to the ICT Suite and they will be taught to log on to the system. The computers will be used to support different aspects of the curriculum. They will continue to develop mouse control and the use of the keyboard through various programmes.

Art
We shall be developing the skills of cutting, mixing paint and experiencing different textures. The children will complete 2D shape pictures and a variety of Christmas crafts.

Physical Education
We shall explore and develop basic gymnastic actions on the floor and apparatus. We shall use different stimuli to explore actions and create short dances. We shall develop basic throwing, rolling kicking and hitting actions and experience using a wide range of equipment.

Design Technology
We shall design and make sunglasses. We shall use split pins to give movement to a little boy lifting a spoon. We shall make a glove puppet and design and make string puppets. We shall draw a two-way projection of the school mini-bus and then make a model of it.

Music
For the year, strong links are placed on the importance of reading in Music. We will be exploring sound and listening, to develop the ability to identify different sounds and to change and use sounds expressively in response to a stimulus. We will learn songs for Harvest and Christmas celebrations.

PSHE
We will be looking at the following areas: Rules for the classroom, playground and dining room. Keeping safe and healthy eating and hygiene, and finding out about the people who help us in school.
