AUTUMN TERM 2008 - YEAR 5

Mathematics
We will study fractions, decimals and data handling. Also, area, perimeter, nets, circles, measurement and construction of angles.

English
Historical accounts, looking at script format, various forms of poetry, note taking and report writing is covered. Work on grammar and punctuation.

Science
Year 5 will learn about different life cycles during the first part of the term. They will then find out about the gases around us and some of their properties.

History
The Tudors – starting with the Wars of the Roses and the establishment of the Tudor dynasty, and a Tudor Christmas.

Geography
Weather and climate – including recording temperature and rainfall using meteorological instruments and producing graphs.

French
We will build on the French learnt last year and start learning about France. We will also learn how to talk about the weather in French.

Religious Education
Introduction to Islam; the life of Muhammed and Muslim belief and practice.

ICT
The children will explore graphical modelling. This builds on previous work with paint and graphics packages. They will explore a graphics package, learn how to manipulate, rotate, move and resize elements. Their ultimate task will be to redesign an area they are familiar with, eg the layout of their classroom. They will also revisit Microsoft Word and explore more advanced features. Children will develop touch typing skills throughout the year. The children will create their own work folder and begin to recognise the importance of saving documents in the right place and keeping folders organised.

Art
Weaving and paper making with reference to their uses in every day life.

Physical Education
We will learn to understand the principals behind warming up and construct our own warm up. We will explore symmetrical moves on the floor and apparatus.
Girls: Hockey, netball, cross country
Boys: Football, rugby, cross country
Explore and improvise ideas for dances from different times and places.

Design Technology
We will be designing and making models which incorporate an eccentric wheel to create either an up and down or a side to side movement.

Music
‘African Drumming’. Through improvisation and call and response, the children compose and perform rhythms that have been notated and also rhythms that they have created. A very practical course, which involves playing and rehearsing as a band, developing stamina, co-ordination and co-operation.
Singing is based on celebrations of Harvest and Christmas.

PSHE
We will be looking at the following areas during the year: Rules and Laws, My Body, Keeping Healthy, Me and My Relationships, Keeping Safe, and Making the Most of My Abilities.
