AUTUMN TERM 2008 - YEAR 4

Mathematics
We will be revising place value, the addition of pairs to 10 and 20, investigating addition and subtraction strategies and counting on and back in 50’s and 25’s to 1000. We will also do work on length, 2D shape and time.

English
The children will be investigating settings, characters and narrative order in a range of texts; these will include Traditional Fairy Tales, playscripts and historical novels. In poetry we will be comparing poems on a common theme, discussing personal response and writing poems based on personal or imagined experience. We will be identifying the use of powerful verbs and adverbs and their use in sentences, and also learning to spell regular verb endings.

Science
This term, the children are learning about how the body moves and grows. They will then learn about electrical circuits and conductors.

History
We will study the Ancient Greeks, looking in particular at the city states of Athens and Sparta, buildings, Greek Gods and the Olympic Games. This will continue until mid-year.

Geography
Initially, we will look at continents. We will be studying Kenya and India. We will locate the two countries on a map and compare the size, climate and landscape of the two countries to that of the UK.

French
The children will start learning French focusing initially on speaking and listening and then starting to read and write. We will learn phrases for “meeting and greeting”; numbers; the alphabet in French; talking about transport and families.

Religious Education
We will be looking at Hindu worship and Christmas journeys.

ICT
The children will consider the use of ICT in writing for different audiences. This is based on the study of fonts and their effectiveness in every day use. The children will also learn to produce images using appropriate tools and select and copy areas to create different effects. They will develop skills in touch typing throughout the year. They will also be taught how to access the Internet safely. They will create their own folder for their work and begin to recognise the importance of document names.

Art
Concentrates on body adornment and masks in different cultures and explores the use of materials to create ephemeral art.

Physical Education
We will develop flight on floor and using apparatus, and learn dance moves that link to produce short sequences.
Girls: Hockey/netball
Boys: Football/Rugby
We will continue to improve back-crawl, breast- stroke, front-crawl and butterfly. We will also develop water skills

Design Technology
We will be designing and building an electrical puzzle for a child of 4 years old, incorporating lights and a buzzer.
