AUTUMN TERM 2008 - YEAR 2

Mathematics
Skills include:
Developing and extending the concepts of addition and subtraction.
Number recognition and ordering to 100.
Number Bonds to 20.
Revise x2, x5, x10 multiplication tables.
Odd and Even numbers to 100.
Number doubles to 100.
Money and coins will be further explored.
2-D and 3-D shape names and properties.
Days of the week and months of the year.
Time: O’clock and half past.
Mathematical vocabulary will be extended.
We will be measuring, using a cm ruler.
Data handling and graphs will be continued.

English
There will be daily reading using Reading Scheme books and the class library. Group reading activities will also take place. Speaking and listening skills will be developed and extended, including poetry. Writing will include creative pieces, news writing, reporting and recording. Alphabetical order is introduced. Work will continue on letter formation and joining to form a cursive script.

Spelling will be based on phonic patterns and learning high frequency words. Sentence work will include capital letter and full stop usage; forming sentences correctly, following grammatical conventions. Drama and role-play activities are linked to science and history topics.

Science
This covers plants and animals in the local environment. This will incorporate work on minibeasts.

Variations between plants, animals and humans will be looked at, grouping living things according to similarities and differences.

History
The topic is based on life in the 1950s.
Examining life in Britain, including: home life, school life, money and shopping, games and play, the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, fashion, entertainment and technological innovations.

Geography
The British Isles and map work activities are the main focus.

Religious Education
Rules, Friendship and Sharing.
Harvest celebration
Festivals of Light and Christian seasonal celebrations.

ICT
The children will continue to develop their word processing skills. They will explore the Young Explorer information retrieval program. They will use the My World More Minibeast program.

The Dazzle and 2Paint programs will be used for design work. Interactive Maths programs will also be used.

PSHE
We will be examining the following areas:
Rules and Laws
Friends and Friendship
Me and My Relationships.

Art
Pattern making through block printing. Looking at the relationship between objects in space.

Design Technology
Making a Minibeast pencil case, including both design and production.

Physical Education
We will improve our basic gymnastic moves and balances. We shall explore ways of linking balances.
Games will include hockey, netball, football, rugby based mini games and skills. Full sports kit needed.

Music
Musical elements of long and short duration, and learning songs for the Harvest and Christmas celebrations.
